GTN as a pioneering platform in Nigerian journalism, Governance Today Nigeria joins the nation in mourning the passing of Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed, one of Nigeria’s most distinguished media icons and a foundational pillar of modern Nigerian journalism.

Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed was a veteran journalist, co-founder of the influential Newswatch magazine, and a central figure in Nigeria’s media evolution. He passed on leaving behind a legacy that shaped investigative journalism, editorial independence, and press courage in Nigeria.

A Titan of Nigerian Journalism

In 1984, Mohammed, alongside Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, and Dan Agbese, co-founded Newswatch—Nigeria’s first major newsweekly owned and driven by journalists. The magazine officially launched in 1985, redefining investigative reporting and fearless journalism in the country.

He served as Executive Editor and later Managing Editor, playing a decisive role in shaping Newswatch’s editorial direction and national influence.

In his recently released memoir, Beyond Expectations (2025), Mohammed revealed that professional and ideological disagreements with publisher M.K.O. Abiola propelled the founders to seek editorial independence—an effort that ultimately birthed Newswatch.

Memoir, Justice, and Unfinished Battles

Beyond Expectations offers rare insights into Nigeria’s political and media history, including reflections on the 1986 parcel bomb assassination of Dele Giwa, one of the darkest moments in Nigerian journalism.

Until his passing, Mohammed remained actively involved in efforts by the original founders to reclaim Newswatch assets, following its controversial takeover by businessman Jimoh Ibrahim.
