The Cuban government has reported that 32 of its nationals were killed during a U.S. military operation in Caracas, which also resulted in the capture of Venezuela’s president, Nicolas Maduro. This information was made public in a statement broadcast on national television.

The Cuban government described the deceased as members of Cuba’s Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, who were engaged in operations at the request of Venezuelan agencies.

The U.S. military operation, which took place on Saturday, culminated in Maduro’s extraction from Caracas along with his wife, Cilia Flores, who are both facing charges of drug trafficking and terrorism in a New York court.

Cuban officials emphasized that their soldiers “fulfilled their duty with dignity” and died in combat against the attackers or due to U.S. bombings. In response to the incident, Havana has declared two days of national mourning starting at dawn on Monday and plans to hold tributes for the fallen.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel expressed condolences, stating on social media, “Honor and glory to the brave Cuban fighters who fell facing terrorists in imperial uniform.”
