Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has dismissed viral claims about his comments regarding which region should produce Nigeria’s next president in 2027. Social media reports alleged that El-Rufai stated it is the South’s turn to take the presidency and suggested he might support Labour Party’s Peter Obi over former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
In a statement on his official X handle, El-Rufai clarified that he did not make any such remarks in speeches, interviews, or on social media platforms. He referred to the claims as “untrue” and criticized the spread of fake news.
“At no time did I make such remarks… It is wrong to attribute opinion articles written by other authors to me,” El-Rufai stated. He urged the public and media professionals to verify information before publication, highlighting the harm caused by the irresponsible spread of misinformation.
El-Rufai also emphasized the importance of accountability in addressing fake news and irresponsible politicking, stating, “Society stands to lose when media leaders align with the most irresponsible actors on social media.”
He reiterated that views should only be attributed to him if he has explicitly expressed them on his official platforms or in reputable media interviews.
This statement comes amid ongoing political discussions as Nigeria gears up for the presidential elections scheduled for 2027.
