President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially confirmed that the new tax laws, along with those enacted on June 26, 2025, will come into force on January 1, 2026. This initiative is seen as a pivotal moment for Nigeria, as Tinubu described the reforms as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to create a fair and robust fiscal system.

In a statement signed by the President and issued today, the President clarified that the objective of these new tax laws is not to raise taxes but to implement structural changes that promote fairness, enhance harmonization, and solidify the social contract with citizens. He called on all stakeholders to engage in the upcoming implementation phase, affirming that the process has now moved into a crucial delivery stage.

Addressing public concerns over potential revisions to specific provisions of the newly enacted tax laws, Tinubu assured citizens that “no significant issues have been identified that would disrupt the reform process.” He emphasized the importance of building trust through thoughtful decision-making rather than reacting hastily to concerns.

The President reaffirmed his commitment to due process and the integrity of the newly established laws, stating that he would work closely with the National Assembly to quickly tackle any challenges that may arise. He reassured Nigerians that the Federal Government’s focus remains on creating a tax system that encourages shared prosperity and responsibility.
