The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, and his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Peter Obi, have called for an investigation into allegations of alterations to taxation laws. They are asking relevant authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the reported changes and ensure compliance with due process.

Atiku emphasized the need to suspend the implementation of these laws pending a thorough investigation, asserting that this would allow for proper scrutiny by lawmakers and the public, safeguarding the integrity of the legislative process. He stated, “Something is wrong with this country. It is a very serious issue. Something has been appended to the law, and some people have gone ahead to alter it. This is falsification, and it is criminal.”

Obi also condemned the situation, describing it as a dangerous escalation of poor governance that threatens the Constitution. He pointed out that public trust in governance is rapidly eroding as taxpayers cannot be forced to accept heavier taxes. He remarked that the alterations are not merely administrative oversights but serious threats to constitutional governance.

Both leaders stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in matters affecting national fiscal policy and called for public disclosure of what was signed, what was passed, and what was recorded regarding these tax law changes.
