President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a landmark welfare policy granting lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from the Ministry of Interior and its agencies.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the development on Thursday during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where he presented key achievements of the ministry and reaffirmed its commitment to institutional reform.

According to a statement signed by DCF P.O. Abraham, Head of Corporate Services at the Federal Fire Service, the policy covers officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, and Commandant-General and above.

“In recognition of the welfare of senior officers, the minister announced that any officer retiring from these ranks will now receive lifetime salary benefits, a policy graciously approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement noted.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for what he described as “unwavering support,” stressing that all agencies under the ministry are already benefitting from the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Highlighting other achievements, the minister disclosed that the long-standing backlog of promotions had been cleared, with over 50,000 officers promoted in the past two years. He also revealed that future progression would be guided by a performance and capacity-based system.

As part of broader reforms, Tunji-Ojo announced the development of new training manuals and the ongoing construction of a world-class Fire Academy, designed to rival top global institutions such as the Arizona Fire Academy.

He further underscored the ministry’s growing emphasis on workplace wellness, assuring officers of full support for their mental health and overall welfare.
