In a significant political development, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement was made on Friday, June 6, 2025, during an event at the Government House in Uyo, the state capital.

Governor Eno stated that his decision followed three months of extensive consultations with key political stakeholders across the state. He emphasized the need to align Akwa Ibom State with the federal government to ensure better collaboration and development.

“For some time now, the political space particularly in this state and across the nation, has been filled with speculation about my potential defection from the PDP, the platform that facilitated my rise to the position of governor,” Eno said. “This conversation has generated diverse opinions. Today, I am here to address those lingering questions.”

He confirmed that he had submitted his formal resignation from the PDP to his ward chairman, with copies also delivered to the party’s state and national leadership.

“Earlier this morning, I submitted a formal letter of resignation to the ward chairman of the PDP. Copies were also sent to both the state and national chairmen,” he said. “I want to thank the PDP for their support, their love, and the opportunity to serve Akwa Ibom under their banner over the past two years.”

Governor Eno emphasized that the decision was not made lightly but came after a series of engagements with political leaders and party stakeholders. He noted that his final consultation took place during a Thursday evening meeting with key PDP figures.

“I believe no one in the political history of this state has consulted as widely as I have before making such a move,” he said. “I did it out of respect for all of you as stakeholders in the Akwa Ibom project. I needed your counsel and felt it was important to explain the reasons behind this decision.”

The defection has already begun to reshape the political dynamics in Akwa Ibom State. Some commissioners and political appointees have tendered their resignations, citing personal convictions and loyalty to the PDP. Notably, Ini Ememobong, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport, resigned, stating he could not join the APC due to his principles and long-standing opposition to the party.

The APC has welcomed Governor Eno’s defection, expressing confidence that his decision will contribute significantly to the progress of Akwa Ibom State. The party assured him of full cooperation and accommodation within the APC family.

As the political landscape in Akwa Ibom continues to evolve, Governor Eno’s move to the APC marks a pivotal moment, potentially influencing the state’s alignment with the federal government and impacting future political developments.
