The Labour Party (LP) Caucus in the House of Representatives has condemned former national chairman Julius Abure’s recent appointment of a new caucus leader, calling it laughable and misleading.

Abure’s National Executive Committee announced that Hon. Afam Ogene was removed from his position due to alleged anti-party activities, with Hon. Ben Etanabene named as his successor. However, the LP lawmakers argue that the leadership position should be determined by election among peers, not through unilateral appointments.

In response to media inquiries regarding the Supreme Court ruling that purportedly dismissed Abure, Ogene highlighted that he was elected by the caucus in a competitive vote, receiving 21 out of 31 votes.

The caucus expressed disapproval of Abure’s tactics, affirming that the majority of LP members support the Supreme Court’s ruling, which stated that Abure’s tenure had ended. They criticized his leadership approach, associating it with financial misconduct and a lack of integrity within the party.

This ongoing conflict underscores the challenges facing the Labour Party as it addresses internal divisions and leadership disputes following recent legal developments.
