The Kaduna State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has distanced itself from former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, stating that he is not a recognized member of the party in the state.

This development follows El-Rufai’s recent announcement of his defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the SDP. The former governor had cited ideological differences with the APC leadership as his reason for leaving.

However, at a press briefing in Kaduna on Friday, the Assistant National Secretary for the Northwest Zone, Idris Inuwa, clarified that El-Rufai’s membership claims remain unverified.

“It has come to our notice that certain individuals, including Nasir El-Rufai, are rumored to have joined the SDP. However, neither the Kaduna North Local Government Chapter nor the leadership of Unguwar Sarki Ward has any record of his membership,” Inuwa stated.

He advised El-Rufai and others intending to join the party to follow proper registration procedures before making public claims about their affiliation.

Inuwa also dismissed reports of the dissolution of the Kaduna State SDP Working Committee, calling it unconstitutional. According to him, the state executive committee was duly elected and holds a four-year mandate that remains valid.

“The purported dissolution of the Kaduna State Working Committee is illegal. The SDP constitution outlines a clear process for such actions, including investigations and fair hearings, none of which were followed,” he added.

Despite the controversy, Inuwa reaffirmed that the SDP remains open to new members as long as they adhere to the party’s established guidelines.
