The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced that it will continue to allow free movement for citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, despite these countries’ official exit from the regional bloc, effective today.

In a statement released this morning, ECOWAS emphasized its commitment to regional solidarity and the well-being of the people, urging member states to recognize national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo held by citizens of the three countries until further notice. This decision aims to ensure that the withdrawal does not disrupt the lives and businesses of the affected populations.

ECOWAS further directed its members to treat goods and services from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger in accordance with the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme and investment policy. The organization reassured that citizens from these countries will continue to enjoy visa-free movement, residence, and establishment rights under existing protocols.

The commission has established a framework for discussions regarding future engagements with the three countries, stressing the importance of maintaining support and cooperation for ECOWAS officials from these nations during this transition period.

This announcement follows public celebrations in the three countries, where citizens expressed their discontent with ECOWAS, accusing it of prioritizing French interests. In response, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have formed a new alliance called the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES) and are set to introduce a uniform passport.

As ECOWAS navigates this significant change, the organization remains focused on ensuring that the rights and freedoms of all citizens are upheld.
