Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticized former Senate President Adolphus Wabara over his involvement in the leadership crisis affecting the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Wabara currently serves as the chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT).
Wike accused Wabara of exacerbating the conflict between him and Rivers State Governor Siminilayi Fubara, his former protégé, despite attempts at intervention from President Bola Tinubu.
During a media chat in Abuja, Wike expressed his disapproval of the PDP leaders who are attempting to remove the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu, despite existing court rulings.
He stated, “If Wabara were my father, I would have disowned him. He doesn’t deserve to be a leader. No wonder Obasanjo made a presidential broadcast about his acts of corruption.”
Wike emphasized that the issue is currently in the courts and reiterated the importance of adhering to the party constitution. “If they resign, they must be replaced through elections. The fact that someone is trying to bypass this process doesn’t surprise me,” he added.
The Minister noted that attempts to manipulate the situation would not succeed. “The matter is in the courts, and we should respect the rule of law. We need to focus on resolving issues within the party, particularly with the upcoming convention.”
He urged that instead of inciting crises, the convention should proceed as scheduled in December to usher in a new executive.
