Sylvester Nwakuche, the acting Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), has cautioned personnel against any mistreatment of inmates in their custody. He urged officers to maintain a respectful attitude in their duties, especially towards those incarcerated.
During a lecture in Abuja titled “Character Overhaul and Attitudinal Change,” Nwakuche stressed the importance of changing attitudes as the service seeks comprehensive reforms focused on rehabilitation and redemption.
He noted, “I have conveyed the expectations of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. If we fail to adjust our attitudes and improve our character, we risk creating a toxic work environment that hinders progress.”
Nwakuche emphasized the need for mutual respect, empathy, and professionalism in dealings with inmates, stating that this approach would enhance public trust in the NCoS’s capacity to reform and rehabilitate.
He committed to creating a supportive work environment and encouraged personnel to welcome these essential changes.
Dr. Joseph Danley, the National President of the Foundation for Correction of Moral Decadence, who spoke at the event, highlighted that patriotism and love are crucial for national progress. He stated, “Without patriotism, our collective advancement is impeded. We must instill these values in our everyday interactions to foster a culture of excellence and integrity.”
