The Federal Government has approved an increase in peculiar allowances, welfare benefits, and exit packages for civil servants.

Nigeria’s Head of the Civil Service, Didi Walson-Jack, announced the development during a briefing in Abuja on Friday.

The move is expected to increase the take-home pay of civil servants and boost the morale of the government’s workforce.

Didi Walson-Jack said the increment covers workers under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS).

She explained that the revised allowances apply across all grade levels, resulting in improved earnings for both senior and junior officers. According to her, nearly all allowances captured in the Public Service Rules have now been reviewed.

One of the major changes is the approval of 100 percent Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) for civil servants attending authorised training programmes, whether or not travel is involved. “Even if you are based in Abuja and attend training within Abuja, you are entitled to full DTA,” she said.

Beyond salary adjustments, the Federal Government has introduced a new exit benefit scheme for retiring civil servants under the Contributory Pension Scheme. The initiative guarantees 100 percent of a retiree’s total emoluments as an exit package, in addition to their pension, and will take effect from January 1, 2026.

Walson-Jack noted that the reform is aimed at ensuring dignity in retirement, stressing that no public servant should leave service without adequate financial support.

The Federal Government also confirmed the rollout of the Employee Compensation Scheme, designed to provide financial protection for workers who suffer job-related injuries or death.

The reforms come amid growing demands from labour unions for improved welfare for civil servants, as the rising cost of living continues to place increased pressure on workers across Nigeria.

The development comes about two years after the Federal Government approved a salary increase of between 25% and 35% for civil servants across the remaining six consolidated salary structures.

These include the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Paramilitary Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS), and the Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).
