Nyesom Wike, former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has reignited political debates with a bold declaration: “I’m going to take this power from APC, back to PDP, by the Grace of God!” .
The statement has drawn attention from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Wike’s remark is notable given his political trajectory since the 2023 elections. Though a longtime PDP stalwart, he openly supported APC’s presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and later accepted a role in the APC-led federal government.
While some praised his pragmatism, PDP loyalists criticized him as a political turncoat.
Analysts interpret Wike’s statement as a signal that his alliance with the APC is tactical rather than permanent. His political strength lies in his grassroots network and strategic influence, which he appears ready to leverage to restore PDP power.
Reactions within the PDP are mixed. Some see Wike’s declaration as a path toward reconciliation, while others remain wary, citing past “betrayal.” Regardless, his political clout and resources make him a force the party cannot ignore.
For the APC, the comment highlights the fragile nature of political alliances. Wike’s role in the current administration may be temporary if his ultimate objective is returning power to the PDP, underscoring the shifting dynamics of Nigerian politics.
