The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has stated that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai were granted permission to resolve electoral issues in their parties before officially registering as ADC members.
ADC national publicity secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi made this announcement during a press conference in Abuja, clarifying that they are already part of the coalition.
In related developments, it is anticipated that former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, could officially join ADC on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor and a prominent figure in the opposition coalition, recently resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Although Atiku Abubakar has resigned from the PDP, he has yet to formally declare his membership in the ADC coalition that he helped establish. According to the ADC’s guidelines, only registered members who are not affiliated with any other political party are eligible to seek nominations for public office.
Abdulahi addressed the situations of Obi and El-Rufai, stating, “They were granted leave to complete the process of elections in their legacy parties because they have candidates contesting elections under those platforms. It’s only logical and fair to allow them to finish that process.”
He also emphasized that the ADC does not have a preferred aspirant for the presidential ticket, ensuring a level playing field for all candidates. Abdulahi urged supporters to become members of ADC to participate in the candidate selection process.
Meanwhile, Amaechi’s expected visit to Port Harcourt is seen as a significant step in engaging citizens and strengthening the party’s leadership in the region. ADC’s leadership in Rivers State has confirmed that Amaechi and other coalition leaders will meet to strategize for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
