The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that it is unrealistic to expect his administration to transform every sector in the FCT within just two years. Speaking during a media parley in Abuja, Wike addressed concerns regarding infrastructural gaps, education, healthcare, and transport, urging a more measured understanding of government timelines.

He emphasized the need for quality over quantity in education, saying, “Everybody wants the university to be in his community. Nobody has asked, these two universities you are providing, what’s the quality?” Wike expressed a preference for fewer, higher-quality institutions rather than numerous subpar ones.

Regarding healthcare, Wike acknowledged the ongoing rehabilitation of general hospitals but stated that it would be impossible to provide fully equipped hospitals in all districts within two years. He remarked, “I don’t know why anybody should think that within two years in office, you’re going to have a general hospital in all the other houses. That’s just not possible.”

On the transport system, he admitted it was chaotic but assured that efforts were ongoing to bring order. Wike said, “This is just two years in office. It is not possible for you to turn around all the sectors.”

He outlined the importance of having a clear roadmap for effective governance, stating, “A government must be forward and targeted.” When questioned about the visibility of his mandate secretaries, Wike defended his communication approach and asserted his supervisory role over them.

Wike also announced plans to inaugurate completed and rehabilitated school projects across the territory, stating that while he doesn’t conduct elaborate ceremonies for school projects, progress in educational infrastructure is being made.

In summary, Wike called for patience and understanding from the public as his administration works to address the challenges facing the FCT.
