The United States has returned $53 million in stolen funds to Nigeria, linked to assets associated with former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke.

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), announced during the signing ceremony that $50 million of the funds would support rural electrification projects to boost renewable energy access, while the remaining $2.88 million will fund counter-terrorism capacity building in Africa.

The US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, emphasized trust in Nigeria’s commitment to transparent use of the funds, which will be monitored with periodic reports to ensure accountability.

This collaboration reinforces international efforts to combat corruption and promote socio-economic growth through asset recovery and restitution.
