On November 15, 2025, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki made history by securing the chairmanship of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during a highly anticipated national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State. His resounding victory, which saw him garner 1,516 votes, set the stage for transformative reforms within the party, aimed at restoring internal democracy and unity.

Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, conveyed his profound understanding of the challenges ahead in his acceptance speech. With unwavering confidence, he assured party members that they were capable of navigating through the current tumult. “Our party is at a crossroads, but we are equal to the challenge,” he declared, rallying delegates with the promise of progressive change.

The newly elected chairman emphasized the importance of returning the PDP to its grassroots, stating, “The mandate entrusted to me will not be taken for granted. The PDP belongs to the Nigerian people.” This pledge resonated with delegates, many of whom shared longstanding grievances related to perceived impunity within the party. Turaki’s commitment to dismantling this culture struck a chord, as he envisions a leadership focused on accountability and transparency.

In the wake of his election, Turaki announced that the new National Working Committee would soon present a comprehensive operational blueprint, outlining the direction for the party’s future. His proactive approach inspired optimism among members, who looked forward to a strategic plan that would guide the PDP’s initiatives in the coming months.

The convention itself was a significant milestone, uniting delegates from 17 states, all eager to participate in shaping the party’s journey ahead. Former Anambra Central Senator Ben Obi, overseeing the election process, confirmed Turaki’s victory and clarified other key positions, including the election of former Oyo State Deputy Governor Taofeek Arapaja as the new National Secretary.

As Turaki embarks on this new leadership journey, his vision for the PDP focuses on inclusivity, collaboration, and empowering the voices of the party’s base. “There will be no more impunity,” he proclaimed, signaling a departure from the past and promising to foster a culture of democratic ideals.

The PDP stands at a pivotal moment; Turaki’s leadership could herald a new chapter, breathing life into a party eager for revival. His commitment to reform and accountability will be critical as he works to unite members and address the challenges that lie ahead, paving the way for a stronger, more resilient PDP.
