United States President Donald Trump has announced that American forces carried out an air strike targeting ISIL fighters in northwest Nigeria on Christmas Day.
Trump disclosed this in a post on his Truth Social account, saying the operation was ordered by him and described it as a “deadly strike” against ISIL elements allegedly responsible for attacks on civilians.
The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed the strike, stating that it was conducted at the request of Nigerian authorities and led to the killing of several ISIL fighters. The operation reportedly took place in Sokoto State.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also acknowledged the development, confirming that Nigeria is working with international partners, including the United States, to tackle terrorism and violent extremism in the North West.
The Nigerian military said the air strike was carried out based on credible intelligence and with the approval of the Federal Government, stressing that it was part of ongoing efforts to prevent foreign terrorist groups from establishing a foothold in the country.
Trump’s statement comes amid earlier claims by him about attacks on Christians in Nigeria, which the Nigerian government has previously disputed, noting that terrorist groups target both Muslims and Christians.
Security agencies say counter-terrorism operations in the region are ongoing.
