Lt.-Gen. Jeremiah Useni (Rtd), the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under Gen. Sani Abacha, has passed away at the age of 82. His death was confirmed by Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang in a statement released in Jos by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr. Gyang Bere.
Mutfwang described Useni’s passing as a significant loss for Plateau State and expressed his condolences to Useni’s family and the community. He encouraged them to find comfort in their faith during this challenging time.
“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau, I extend my deepest sympathy to the President, the Armed Forces, and the Tarok nation over the loss of this distinguished elder statesman. I also convey my condolences to his family and urge them to seek solace in God,” said Mutfwang.
Useni had a notable military career, serving as Minister of Transport and Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, among other roles. Following his retirement, he ventured into politics, becoming Deputy Chairman of the now-defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later a senator. He was also the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate in Plateau during the 2019 General Elections.
