The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the traditional military parade that was scheduled for the 26th Democracy Day celebrations on Thursday, June 12, 2025, without providing an official reason for this decision.
Instead, President Bola Tinubu will address the nation with a broadcast at 7 a.m. on Thursday. This announcement comes from the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day Celebration. Later that day, the President will participate in a special joint session of the National Assembly at noon, where important democratic milestones and government reforms will be highlighted.
The revised agenda includes a presidential broadcast at 7 a.m., the cancellation of the Democracy Day parade, and a joint session in the National Assembly at noon. Additionally, there will be a public lecture at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja at 4 p.m., focusing on the theme “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”
The committee has indicated that the public lecture will be covered exclusively by accredited State House correspondents, reaffirming their commitment to a meaningful celebration of Democracy Day despite the changes to traditional events.
