Victor Osimhen scored twice as Nigeria dominated Mozambique in the Africa Cup of Nations, advancing to the quarter-finals with a decisive 4-0 victory in the round of 16.
Ademola Lookman, a previous African Footballer of the Year, kickstarted the scoring in the 20th minute and was instrumental in setting up the remaining goals.
Osimhen, who initially played without his trademark mask, put it on before scoring Nigeria’s second goal in the 25th minute. He followed up with another goal just after half-time, while Akor Adams capped the scoring later in the match.
This victory marks the largest margin in an AFCON knockout tie since Egypt defeated Algeria 4-0 in 2010.
With this performance, the Super Eagles aim to rectify their past failure to qualify for the World Cup, looking forward to their next match in Marrakesh against either Algeria or the Democratic Republic of Congo, who face off in the last 16.
Mozambique, making their first appearance in the knockout stage, struggled against a reinvigorated Nigerian side. Lookman’s contributions, along with Iwobi’s assists, were pivotal in ensuring a comprehensive win, leaving the team in an optimistic position for the next phase of the tournament.
