A human rights lawyer and counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has called on President Bola Tinubu to halt the monthly media chats of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, deeming them wasteful and extravagant. In a statement released, Ejiofor criticized the significant allocation of public funds for these media appearances, which he views as an unnecessary expenditure amid widespread economic hardship.
Ejiofor expressed concern that while millions of Nigerians face record inflation, stagnant wages, and deepening poverty, Wike reportedly spends hundreds of millions of naira each month on ostentatious media events that lack substance. He highlighted that the funds used for a single media chat could instead provide emergency relief or refurbish local schools and health clinics.
The lawyer described the media chats as a “tone-deaf misuse of public funds,” emphasizing that Nigerians seek competent governance and responsible spending rather than a televised spectacle. He urged President Tinubu to take immediate action to redirect focus toward service delivery and address the pressing needs of the populace. Ejiofor concluded that the current moment calls for humility and a commitment to the public good, asserting that Nigeria deserves better.
