Ahead of the 2027 elections, the Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide, a group from Benin City, has warned Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to distance himself from the politics in the Edo South Senatorial District. This caution follows rumors about the senatorial ambitions of former House of Representatives member, Hon Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, who is reportedly being considered as the candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The group expressed discontent with what they perceive as a political arrangement influenced by Wike, suggesting that his involvement stems from an alliance formed during the recent gubernatorial election. They criticized Ogbeide-Ihama’s past actions, particularly his support for former Governor Godwin Obaseki during the 2020 election, arguing that such behavior disqualifies him from adequately representing Benin’s interests.
The group stated emphatically that Edo South would not tolerate political arrangements that lack genuine representation. They condemned the idea of Ogbeide-Ihama assuming a senatorial role, citing his previous political conduct and betrayal of trust as significant issues. The group’s leaders emphasized that the senatorial ticket must be earned and should not be treated as a mere consolation prize.
Wike was specifically admonished to refrain from meddling in Edo’s internal political matters, with the group asserting that any attempt to impose an unsuitable candidate would fail. They conveyed a strong message that Edo South is politically astute and historically grounded, prepared to resist external pressure in its political dealings.
