The Senate has announced that Nigerians should not expect the passage of the N49.7 trillion budget for the 2025 fiscal year before January 31. This announcement follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presentation of the budget to a joint session of the National Assembly on December 18, where he urged lawmakers to expedite its approval.

Senator Yemi Adaramodu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, informed the press that the budget defense by ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) will commence on January 7, 2025. He also revealed that the joint committees of the House of Representatives and Senate on Appropriations are set to present the final report of the budget on January 31, 2025.

Currently, the appropriation bill has successfully passed the second reading in both chambers of the National Assembly, paving the way for the upcoming budget defense sessions. Senator Adaramodu emphasized the importance of this process, stating, “Joint Committees of Senate and House of Representatives will start meeting with MDAs on January 7. Final report will be laid on 31st January.”
