The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, were warmly received by Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Sunday during their visit to Lagos House, Marina.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, his wife, Dr. Ibijoke, and a few other State Executive Council members welcomed the royal couple.
Speaking with journalists after a closed-door meeting with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the British royal couple for their efforts with Nigeria’s military personnel, particularly concerning mental health issues.
He also expressed interest in hosting the Invictus Games in Nigeria, allowing for Nigerian competitiveness to shine through.
Meanwhile, the paramount ruler of Iwoland in Osun State, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has hailed the visit of the British royal couple, stating that it will reconnect Meghan with her Nigerian ancestral roots.
Meghan had, during a 2022 interview, said she was “43 per cent Nigerian” following a genealogy test.
Oba Akanbi expressed optimism that the couple’s visit would bolster Nigeria’s bid to host the 2027 Invictus Games, a move that would further support the nation’s soldiers and veterans.
In honouring Meghan, Oba Akanbi bestowed upon her the Yoruba name “Adetokunbo,” symbolising the return of royalty from abroad.
