GTN can confirm that Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 14th Emir of Kano, is en route to reclaim his throne.
In 2020, Sanusi, who had a falling out with former Kano governor Abdullahi Ganduje, was overthrown.
The Ganduje administration established the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law in 2019, which came into effect prior to his deposition. Four new emirates were also established: Rano, Karaye, Gaya, and Bichi.
On May 23, 2024, the law was repealed by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-controlled Kano House of Assembly, which cleared the way for the emirates to be abolished and the modifications made by Ganduje’s bill to take effect.
A copy of the revoked legislation that GTN was able to view states that, “All offices created in the newly created five Emirates under the repealed principal law, dated 5th December, 2019 are hereby abrogated. All appointment made under the said repealed Principal Law dated 5th December, 2019 are hereby set aside.”
“Emir Sanusi is currently preparing for his return to the throne. Although he is not in town at the moment, we are expecting his return on Friday,” one of the sources said.
GTN understands that Sanusi is in Lagos and making preparations for an elegant return.
