The Rivers State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its decision to proceed with impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, dismissing suggestions that the process would be halted.

The resolution was reached during a plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, where lawmakers unanimously agreed to continue investigating allegations of gross misconduct brought against the two executive officials.

Following the vote, the Assembly formally invoked constitutional provisions by calling on the Chief Judge of Rivers State to constitute a panel to investigate the allegations, a mandatory step in the impeachment procedure.

Addressing the House, the Speaker stated that the outcome of the deliberations reflected a collective decision of the legislature and urged the judiciary to act promptly in setting up the investigative panel.

In a related development, four lawmakers who had earlier distanced themselves from the impeachment process returned to align with the Assembly’s position, publicly declaring renewed support for the proceedings.

The legislators accused the governor of constitutional violations, political intimidation, and conduct they described as incompatible with democratic governance, insisting that the Assembly was duty-bound to exercise its oversight powers without external pressure.

The Assembly maintained that the impeachment process would continue strictly within constitutional bounds, underscoring its resolve to pursue the matter to its legal conclusion in the interest of accountability and the rule of law.
