The House of Representatives has unanimously rejected the United States’ decision to limit most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerian citizens to a single entry with a three-month validity period. This resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Muhammad Muktar and four co-sponsors during a plenary session.

Muktar emphasized that this new policy threatens the aspirations of ordinary Nigerians seeking to study, work, or reunite with family in the U.S. He expressed concerns that the July 8, 2025, policy change by the U.S. Department of State could have serious implications for business operations, academic pursuits, and family connections within Nigeria’s diaspora community.

The lawmaker underscored the historical partnership between Nigeria and the U.S., highlighting the contributions of Nigerians in various sectors such as healthcare, technology, and public service. He called for the U.S. government to reconsider its decision, noting that it undermines decades of goodwill and cooperation between the two nations.

The House condemned the U.S. government’s decision to downgrade Nigerian visa status without considering the strategic relationship between both countries. It urged the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria and the Department of State to restore the previous five-year multiple entry visa regime.

Additionally, the House mandated the Nigeria-United States Parliamentary Friendship Group to formally communicate its position to U.S. Congress and the State Department, advocating for fairer immigration policies. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was also directed to engage in diplomatic discussions with the U.S. to maintain strong bilateral relations and protect the dignity of Nigerian citizens.

The lawmakers called for a more nuanced approach from the U.S. that reflects the realities of their long-standing cooperation, reinforcing the importance of people-to-people diplomacy.
