The House of Representatives Committee on China-Nigeria Parliamentary Relations has initiated an investigation into a viral video showing Nigerian workers in the Central African Republic (CAR) alleging abandonment and mistreatment. The miners, who claimed they were recruited by a Chinese mining company, reported having their passports confiscated and being subjected to inhumane treatment.
The workers, stranded in Senye, Bambari region, appealed for assistance and urged Nigerians to amplify their message. Jaafaru Yakubu, chairman of the committee, expressed concern over their ordeal and assured that a comprehensive investigation is underway.
The committee also addressed the role of Abdulrauf Ademola, the businessman accused in the video, who denied allegations of passport seizure and abandonment. They urged the public not to associate Ademola’s actions with legitimate Chinese businesses.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government confirmed the successful rescue of the stranded workers, who are now in the custody of the Nigerian Embassy in Bangui. Officials are making arrangements for their return to Nigeria. The agent responsible for luring them into the job has been identified and is expected to face prosecution.
The situation has highlighted the need for accurate reporting and the importance of protecting Nigerian workers abroad.
