The Nigeria Police Force has issued a stern warning to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Eastern Security Network (ESN), and other non-state actors against any attempts to disrupt the upcoming Anambra governorship election. This warning was articulated by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun during the signing of a peace accord by 16 political parties in Awka.

In a statement delivered by Deputy Inspector General Ben Okoro, the IGP declared that any disruption of the electoral process would prompt a swift and overwhelming law enforcement response. The police have implemented targeted intelligence operations to identify and dismantle any groups engaging in intimidation or violence during the election.

Egbetokun emphasized that anyone bearing arms or engaging in unauthorized security activities would be treated as an armed non-state actor, facing immediate arrest and prosecution under relevant laws. He highlighted the zero tolerance policy for electoral offenses, which include ballot snatching and voter intimidation, stating these would be treated as serious criminal violations.

The peace accord also lays down clear Election Day protocols, including restrictions on VIP movements and campaigning around polling units. Political parties and their supporters are urged to maintain peace and conduct their campaigns honorably.

Former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, speaking on behalf of the National Peace Committee, reminded candidates of their duty to uphold the peace accord, stressing the importance of discipline and responsibility in the electoral process.

Prof. Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), reiterated the commission’s commitment to conducting free and fair elections, urging all stakeholders to collaborate towards achieving a peaceful electoral outcome. He announced that INEC has finalized the register of eligible voters and extended the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to ensure maximum participation.

With robust security measures in place, including the deployment of thousands of personnel on Election Day, the police and INEC expressed confidence that the Anambra governorship election would be peaceful and successful.
