Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He announced his decision on December 31, 2025, at an event held in Enugu, where many prominent political figures from the South-East were present.
Obi stated that his move is aimed at transforming and “rescuing” Nigeria, positioning the ADC as a platform to build broad support ahead of the 2027 general elections. He emphasized the need to resist election rigging by lawful means in 2027.
The defection follows months of speculation about his political direction and marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape. Other South-East leaders also joined Obi in the defection event in Enugu, signaling a major realignment in regional politics.
