Despite the defection of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State and his supporters to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the acting chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Barr Steve Orurua, has declared that the party is still alive. Orurua made this assertion during a press briefing in his office in Enugu. His emergence as acting chairman followed the resignation of the previous chairman.
Orurua assured that the PDP is willing to rebuild itself despite the defections. He urged PDP supporters to be united and motivated. As an opposition party, he emphasized the need to create a sense of reawakening. Orurua also assured a level playing ground for all members, advocating for strong primaries and quality candidates.
He acknowledged the challenges posed by the governor’s defection but insisted that the PDP remains strong in Enugu State. Orurua, a former deputy chairman of the party, expressed confidence that the PDP would bounce back stronger and more united than ever, and is already looking ahead to the 2027 elections, with plans to field a strong candidate to challenge the APC. He also stated that the party would not be challenging the defection of Governor Mbah in court.
Furthermore, Orurua has been appointed as the Chairman of the South East Zonal Disciplinary Committee of the PDP.
