The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the Federal Government over what it described as a failure in security communication, following reports that the United States announced airstrikes on terrorist targets in Nigeria before Nigerian authorities addressed the public.

In a statement on Friday, PDP spokesperson Ini Ememobong said it was troubling that Nigerians first learned of a sensitive military operation through statements by US President Donald Trump and other American officials, rather than from their own government.

According to the opposition party, the delayed response by Nigerian authorities forced citizens to rely on foreign sources for information on security activities carried out within the country’s borders.

The PDP said while international cooperation in the fight against terrorism is welcome, Nigeria should take the lead in informing its people on matters affecting national security.

The party also urged the Federal Government to prioritise joint military operations that strengthen Nigeria’s capacity, rather than depending on foreign-led airstrikes, warning that poor communication could undermine public trust and national sovereignty.
