The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is embroiled in confusion following a Supreme Court ruling that reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary, despite the National Working Committee’s (NWC) insistence that Sunday Ude-Okoye holds the position. This internal struggle has been exacerbated by ongoing tensions within the party, particularly after the 2023 elections.
The Supreme Court’s unanimous decision overturned a previous ruling from the Court of Appeal, affirming that leadership matters within a political party are internal affairs and not subject to judicial intervention. Anyanwu had contested earlier judgments that removed him, arguing that the courts lacked jurisdiction over such internal disputes.
Following the ruling, Anyanwu returned to the PDP headquarters, calling for unity among party members as they prepare for the 2027 elections. Meanwhile, the NWC reaffirmed its position that Ude-Okoye was duly appointed through the party’s internal mechanisms and urged unity among members.
The ongoing confusion within the PDP highlights the party’s internal divisions and challenges in governance, as many stakeholders remain uncertain about the implications of the Supreme Court’s decision.
