The Edo State Government has confirmed the arrest of more than 300 cult leaders over the past year, following a series of raids conducted by a special security squad. This initiative aligns with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to combat cultism and kidnapping within the state.

Noah Idemudia, Coordinator of the Edo State Special Security Squad, announced the arrests and reported the demolition of various buildings linked to suspected cultists. Earlier this year, Governor Okpebholo enacted the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, 2025, along with the Kidnapping Prohibition (Amendment) Law, 2025. These laws impose stringent penalties, including a mandatory 10-year prison sentence for those harboring cultists, 21 years for cultists causing injury or property damage, and the death penalty for kidnappers whose victims do not survive.

During the first anniversary of Governor Okpebholo, Idemudia highlighted the establishment of the Special Security Squad as part of a broader effort to combat insecurity, stating, “Edo State Government has promised hard times for those perpetrating criminal activities across the state. There is no hiding place for them.”

He urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The operation, termed “Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists,” is a strategic effort spearheaded by the Governor’s Principal Security Officer and aims to address the long-standing security challenges in Edo State, particularly in areas such as Benin City, Ekpoma, and Auchi.

With the state’s ongoing issues surrounding gangs and kidnappings, the government is committed to creating a secure environment that fosters peace and development for all residents.
