Senator Ali Ndume has expressed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should be apprehensive about his 2027 presidential ambitions due to the ongoing efforts by coalition forces aiming to challenge him.

Ndume’s comments came as key opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, visited former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna.

He emphasized that Tinubu should be worried if Buhari is not supporting him, given Buhari’s political influence in the North. During an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Ndume pointed out that while Buhari may only have one vote, his popularity remains significant in Northern Nigeria.

Ndume mentioned he is also planning to meet with Buhari soon, noting that although Buhari’s influence may have waned since leaving office, he still commands a loyal following.

He stated, “Buhari’s popularity has naturally diminished since he is no longer in power, but he remains an important figure, especially among the Northern masses.”

When asked about Buhari’s current political relevance, Ndume reiterated that his status as a former president with substantial support cannot be overlooked.

Despite claims that Buhari did not back Tinubu in 2023, Ndume disagreed, stating that Buhari did indeed provide support, albeit not overtly.

Addressing concerns about the ruling APC facing defections, Ndume acknowledged that such threats should not be ignored, as every vote counts.

He attributed the discontent within the party to the failure of the APC-led government to include those who contributed to the party’s success, leading many to feel abandoned.

Regarding Tinubu’s prospects in 2027, Ndume expressed that current circumstances should raise concerns, citing a global economic downturn and internal challenges within the presidency.

He also commented on the security situation in Borno and the North-East, calling for increased efforts from security forces.

Ndume criticized Tinubu’s administration, describing it as filled with “kleptocrats” rather than democrats, emphasizing the need for genuine democratic leadership.

In the context of political visits, Ndume noted that key opposition figures had recently met with Buhari, amid speculation of forming a coalition for the upcoming elections, but the delegation downplayed any political motives behind their visit.
