The Ondo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, has arrested 39 suspects who allegedly fled Sokoto State and took refuge in forest reserves across Ondo.
State Commander, Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed the arrests on Tuesday in Akure during the parade of the suspects, alongside 22 others apprehended for various criminal activities in the state.
According to Adeleye, the 39 suspects relocated to Ondo following a recent United States–supported military strike against ISIS terrorists in northern Nigeria. They were intercepted at the Elegbeka axis in Ose Local Government Area, a historic security flashpoint known for violent incidents, including the past murder of the Olufon of Ifon.
“These suspects were found hibernating in the forest, with their vehicles parked far from their hideouts. We are profiling them, and those found with incriminating materials will be prosecuted,” Adeleye said.
He added that Elegbeka has long been a black spot for criminal activity, prompting Amotekun to establish a permanent forest control post to curb kidnapping and armed robbery. The sudden influx of the suspects has raised serious security concerns, especially as the government requires permits for forest residency.
The arrests were part of Amotekun’s Ember-month security operations across Ondo State. During the patrol period, about 100 suspects were arrested, including:
50 for breach of law and order
6 for kidnapping-related offences
3 for rape and gender-based violence
2 for anti-open grazing violations
The commander reassured the public that the agency will continue to ensure law and order and clamp down on criminal elements operating in the state’s forests.
