Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has applauded his Akwa Ibom counterpart, Pastor Umo Eno, for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the decision as a strategic step that will benefit the South-South region and Nigeria as a whole.
Governor Eno’s defection, which took place on Friday, was a significant political shift that also saw all 31 local government chairmen and state lawmakers in Akwa Ibom cross over to the APC. However, the move sparked protests from within his administration, leading to the resignation of three commissioners.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Governor Okpebholo described Eno’s decision as bold and visionary, aligning Akwa Ibom with the developmental blueprint of the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
“The decision by Governor Umo Eno to join the APC shows his foresight and dedication to the welfare of his people. It signifies a strategic alignment that will undoubtedly unlock greater opportunities, foster stronger collaborations, and accelerate the delivery of democratic dividends to the good people of Akwa Ibom State,” Okpebholo said.
He added that the defection would strengthen regional cooperation and national cohesion, encouraging greater synergy between states in the South-South and the central government.
Governor Okpebholo also assured Eno of the unwavering support of the Edo State Government and the APC, promising close collaboration to promote good governance and economic prosperity.
