Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for enhanced oversight of Nigeria’s courier and delivery services sector to combat the infiltration of drug traffickers. Obi described the situation as alarming, emphasizing the need to restore a system where laws are respected, leaders are held accountable, and justice prevails.
Obi’s statement follows recent revelations by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) that dispatch riders are being used as unwitting or complicit couriers in drug trafficking operations. The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has also raised concerns about courier operators transporting dangerous weapons and illicit drugs.
Obi expressed concern about the weakening of institutions and monitoring systems, which he believes has allowed corruption to flourish and enforcement agencies to become ineffective. He emphasized that drug trafficking poses a significant threat to society, fueling crime, destroying families, and eroding national values.
He urged for stronger oversight and a commitment to rebuilding a system where laws are upheld and those in positions of power are held accountable. Obi stressed that Nigeria needs to address certificate forgery and other forms of dishonesty with the seriousness they deserve, advocating for a society where truth and responsibility are prioritized in governance.
