Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the current state of Nigeria’s democracy, labeling it as transactional and lacking genuine opposition. His comments come in the wake of a recent parliamentary vote that he believes highlighted significant flaws within the democratic framework.

In a statement shared on X, Obi argued that democracy cannot function effectively without a strong opposition, which serves as a crucial pillar for accountability and alternative viewpoints. He noted that the absence of proportional representation in Nigeria’s legislature undermines these principles, distorting electoral outcomes and weakening accountability.

“Where there is no functional opposition, democracy cannot thrive,” Obi stated, emphasizing the need for a political structure that reflects the will of the electorate. He drew comparisons to countries like South Africa and Indonesia, where proportional representation allows multiple parties to maintain their electoral mandates effectively.

Obi highlighted that if Nigeria adopted a similar system, the current Senate composition would better represent electoral outcomes. He pointed out that the lack of laws restricting party defection allows politicians to switch allegiances without consequence, further weakening opposition and undermining electoral integrity.

He warned that unless urgent reforms are enacted to ensure party discipline and fair representation, Nigeria’s democracy will remain fragile and dysfunctional. “What we are left with is not a genuine democratic system, but one that is transactional, compromised, and, in many respects, resembles organized criminality,” he lamented.

Obi affirmed his commitment to advocating for democratic reforms, stating, “We shall continue to fight for democracy—genuine democracy.” His remarks highlight a growing concern among many Nigerians regarding the integrity and functionality of the nation’s democratic processes.
