Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who stepped down from the role during a plenary session on March 3, 2025. Obasa’s reinstatement comes after he was impeached in January due to multiple allegations, including poor leadership, high-handedness, and intimidation of colleagues.
In the wake of his impeachment, Obasa asserted that the removal process was unconstitutional and denied the corruption allegations against him, stating that the claims of financial misappropriation were “impossible.” He maintained that he was still the rightful speaker until the proper procedures were followed for his removal.
To resolve the leadership crisis, influential members of the All Progressives Congress, including former governors, intervened at the directive of President Bola Tinubu. Following a reconciliation meeting, Meranda announced her resignation, along with other principal executives.
During the plenary session, Obasa expressed gratitude to his colleagues and called for unity within the assembly. “We want to assure Lagosians that we have resolved to serve their interest and protect it always,” he said, emphasizing the assembly’s commitment to integrity and cooperation.
Obasa’s return signals a new chapter for the Lagos State House of Assembly as it seeks to move forward and focus on its legislative responsibilities.
