The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced the extension of the service year for 16 corps members in Sokoto State due to various acts of misconduct. This decision was disclosed by State Coordinator Alhaji Usman Yaro during the passing-out ceremony for the 2024 Batch C, Stream 2 corps members.

Yaro emphasized the NYSC’s commitment to discipline, stating, “Discipline remains a core value of the NYSC, while sanctions are necessary to maintain the integrity of the scheme.” The offenses leading to the extension included abscondment and chronic absenteeism, as well as other violations of NYSC regulations.

He also highlighted that two corps members received the prestigious Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar Award for their exceptional contributions to improving their host communities.

The coordinator commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his ongoing support for the NYSC, particularly in the timely payment of state allowances to corps members. He acknowledged the contributions of the Sultan of Sokoto for supporting the initiative.

Yaro noted that corps members were strategically posted to rural areas to promote grassroots development, which aligns with the current administration’s development agenda. He pointed out that many corps medical personnel were deployed to address manpower shortages in the healthcare sector, benefiting thousands of residents through various medical outreach programs.

He urged the outgoing corps members to remain ambassadors of the NYSC and to utilize the skills they acquired during their service appropriately.
