The Super Falcons of Nigeria secured their place in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) by defeating arch-rivals South Africa 2-1 on Tuesday evening.

Captain Rashidat Ajibade opened the scoring in the 45th minute, converting a penalty after a handball by South Africa’s Bambanani Mbane. This goal capped off a dominant first half for Nigeria, who showcased disciplined defense and sharp attacking transitions.

South Africa equalized in the 60th minute when Linda Motlhalo converted a penalty following a foul by Osinachi Ohale. The momentum shifted temporarily in favor of the defending champions.

However, in a dramatic finish, Michelle Alozie scored a stunning long-range winner deep into stoppage time, ensuring Nigeria’s victory. The Super Falcons held firm through nine minutes of stoppage time to secure the win and set up an exciting final in Rabat.

This victory avenges Nigeria’s loss to South Africa in the previous tournament, highlighting their resilience and determination as they aim for their tenth WAFCON title.
