Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde emphasized the importance of unity among Nigerians during the 65th anniversary celebration of Nigeria’s Independence, held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Adamasigba, Ibadan. Represented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, Makinde spoke on the theme “Unity and Rebuilding,” urging citizens to come together regardless of their religious or ethnic backgrounds.

In his address, Makinde congratulated Nigerians on the milestone, highlighting the significance of independence in various forms—economic, psychological, and bodily. He stressed the need for a collective effort to suppress divisive tendencies and focus on what uplifts the nation.

Referencing the successes of countries like India and China, which thrive despite their diverse populations, Makinde called for similar unity in Nigeria to foster progress. He urged Nigerians to keep hope alive and work towards a stronger, more cohesive nation.

The celebration included a march past and the presentation of prizes, with attendance from notable dignitaries, including the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly and the Head of Service. This year’s Independence Day was marked by a cancellation of the usual military parades, focusing instead on community and cultural events to commemorate the day.
