Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Tuesday morning, marking the second system failure recorded in January 2026.
The latest collapse comes just days after a similar incident last Friday, raising fresh concerns over the stability of the country’s power infrastructure.
Confirmation of the system failure came from the Nigeria National Grid, which announced the development in a post on X at about 10:53 a.m. The post simply stated, “Grid Collapse,” followed shortly by another update assuring that “Restoration is in progress.”
Data obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that power generation dropped to zero megawatts at the time of the collapse.
As a result, electricity supply was disrupted across several parts of the country. Distribution companies affected by the outage include those serving Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Benin, Eko, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja and Yola.
The repeated grid failures within a short period have intensified public concern over the reliability of Nigeria’s electricity network, as power sector authorities work to restore supply nationwide.
