Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the suspended lawmaker representing Kogi Central, has urged Nigerians to ensure that democracy delivers meaningful progress beyond the act of voting. In her Democracy Day message, she emphasized the importance of upholding justice, equity, inclusion, and national unity as fundamental values that must guide the country’s democratic journey.

Paying tribute to Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola and other pro-democracy figures, Akpoti-Uduaghan described June 12 as a powerful reminder of Nigeria’s collective struggle for democratic governance. She acknowledged the courage of Abiola and countless others who stood in defense of the people’s will and sacrificed for the nation’s current democratic system.

While recognizing that Nigeria has made some democratic strides, she insisted that the true measure of progress lies in how well governance improves the daily lives of its citizens. She maintained that democracy should result in tangible development, empower the vulnerable, uphold the rule of law, and safeguard the dignity of every Nigerian.

The senator called on Nigerians—particularly women and young people—to remain actively involved in the democratic process. According to her, their voices and participation are vital in building a nation that is fair and inclusive for all, regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, or social status.

Reaffirming her dedication to public service, she pledged to continue advocating for inclusive policies and transparency in governance. She concluded by encouraging Nigerians not to lose hope in the country, but to unite across divides and work toward making democracy a reality in the lives of all citizens.
