Members of the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja have recently made a strong appeal to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, to reopen the club. This request follows a week-long petition signing initiative held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, where over 2,000 members expressed their support for the club’s reopening.
The petition campaign started on Tuesday and concluded on Saturday, emphasizing the importance of reopening the club for both recreational and social purposes in Abuja. The IBB Golf Club has been facing a leadership crisis, which led to the postponement of its 2025 Annual General Meeting and elections. This situation prompted Minister Wike to intervene by appointing a new Board of Trustees, chaired by Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem.
The FCT Administration is committed to restoring order and efficiency within the club. However, some members have expressed dissatisfaction with the Minister’s actions, leading to a court order that temporarily prevents the inauguration of the new Board. To stabilize the situation, Wike appointed a ten-member Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the club’s administration, while security personnel have been deployed to maintain order at the club premises.
Members who supported the reopening emphasized the club’s significance to the community. They expressed their willingness to comply with the Minister’s conditions for reopening and clarified that they were not involved in the legal actions taken against him. Iyabo Adebola, a member, stated, “We are appealing to the FCT Minister to kindly consider our request to reopen the IBB International Golf and Country Club, as we are not part of the few individuals who took legal action against him.” Other members echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the need for social connections and the positive impact of the club on their well-being.
The petition signing initiative reflects a collective desire among IBB Golf Club members to resolve the ongoing leadership crisis and restore normal operations at the club. The support for reopening underscores the club’s role as a vital recreational and social hub in Abuja.
