Activist lawyer Madubuachi Idam has declared that Senate President Godswill Akpabio is due for impeachment due to gross misconduct and abuse of power. Idam criticized Akpabio and Kogi Senator Natasha Akpoti for turning the Senate into a “joke,” highlighting the ongoing controversy between them as a source of shame for the institution.
The conflict escalated when Akpoti discovered that her seat had been reassigned upon her return to the Senate. She challenged the decision, leading to a heated exchange with Akpabio. In a viral video, Akpoti was seen confronting the Senate President, asserting, “I’m not afraid of you.”
Idam emphasized that until lawmakers recognize impeachment as a lawful process rather than an act of rebellion, such reckless behavior will persist. In a statement, he expressed disappointment over the Senate’s current state, suggesting that Akpabio’s leadership has diminished public respect for the National Assembly.
He stated, “The incessant controversy featuring Senator Akpabio on the floor of the Senate has reduced the National Assembly to a joke.” Idam also noted that the clout the National Assembly once enjoyed has been eroded under Akpabio’s leadership.
Idam concluded by asserting that Akpabio is “due for impeachment” and urged that legal processes be initiated to uphold democratic principles, arguing that strengthening Nigeria’s democracy requires accountability from its leaders.
