Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday removed Speaker Mudashiru Obasa from his position, citing multiple statutory and financial infractions.

Following his impeachment, Obasa was replaced by his deputy, Lasbat Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1 and previously served as the chief whip of the House.

This action came shortly after reports surfaced detailing Obasa’s oversight of a withdrawal of ₦43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers, among other controversial activities. Notably, Obasa was in Atlanta at the time of his impeachment.

To support their case for his removal, lawmakers circulated a recent article highlighting these issues, along with an internal expenditure document. Obasa, 52, has faced repeated allegations of fraud and political thuggery throughout his tenure. He was first elected Speaker on June 8, 2015, alongside former governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

In 2020, investigations revealed that Obasa had diverted Lagos funds for personal use. He was subsequently invited for questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) due to the overwhelming media scrutiny but denied all allegations, and no formal charges were filed after his meeting with detectives.
